Student Spotlight: Maxey Sanchez

Maxey Sanchez was a pro at online school even before COVID-19 hit and students had to learn virtually.

Maxey’s dog, Dublin.

Maxey is the youngest of five girls, and she was homeschooled almost her entire life. She went to a charter school her freshman year of high school until she started experiencing health issues and had to switch back to doing online school at home.

“It sucks when you’re 12 years old you want to play with your friends but you’re in too much pain,” Maxey said.

Maxey has been experiencing multiple health issues since she was ten. She was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, arthritis, and gastroparesis but doctors still haven’t found a medicine that works for her.

While Maxey was home sick in high school, she started to make patterned masks and scrunchies. The masks were most popular when COVID hit, but now she sells tote bags, dog bandanas and more.

“I’ve always been a crafty person,” Maxey said. “COVID is what made my shop big.”

Maxey maintains a solid Instagram following and Etsy shop, Sew ATX Co, in addition to managing her health, school, and activities. She loves to hammock, play soccer, and hang out with her roommates and friends in CRU. Outside of that, she’s the Social Media Chair for the new Stelos Alliance Student Organization.

“It’s hard to balance health, school and a social life,” Maxey said. “But I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Unlike many Accounting majors, Maxey is going into the field because she genuinely likes it. One day, she hopes to move and work in the Carolinas.

“I’m not doing this for money,” Maxey said. “If I’m doing a job I want to be happy in my career.”
