Student Spotlight: Kam Brown

College is a huge learning curve for everyone, but it can be even more daunting for first-generation students. Although the adjustment was intimidating at first, Kam Brown takes pride in being the first in their family to go to college and being able to help others in a similar situation.

“I want to be the type of person that people can depend on,” Kam said.

Kam had to learn everything about university life on their own, including how to get involved at Texas State. It was challenging, but Kam persevered and forged their own journey as a Bobcat.

In fact, it was their experience as a first-generation student that defined their college career at Texas State. After qualifying for Student Support Services, a program for underrepresented students, it was their Success Coach, Jamie, that convinced them to become a leader on campus.

Kam was not originally interested in holding officer positions; however, after receiving support from Jamie, they were inspired and decided to get out of their comfort zone.

“I want to be the type of person that people can depend on just like that,” Kam said.

Now, Kam is part of the Gold Star Society. As a part of this society, they serve as an ambassador for the university by volunteering at presidential and campus sponsored events. In addition to this, they serve as a mentor to other students in organizations like First-Generation, Low-Income Partnerships (FLIP) and the Student Support Services Association.

With a major in Manufacturing Engineering and a minor in Applied Mathematics, Kam hopes to become a teacher and explain the workings of machines to high school students.
