Student Spotlight: Abby Garcia

Family has been a driving force in Abby Garcia’s life. Not only did she find her hobbies with the help of her loved ones, but she found her passion in life as well.

In the 6th grade, Abby started orchestra, and after receiving some motherly advice she chose to play the violin for mariachi. Mariachi has been woven into Abby’s lineage for as long as she can remember.

“To me, mariachi is home, it’s family, it means so many different things,” Abby said.

Although Abby originates from the valley, she became a Bobcat because the mariachi program offered at Texas State drew her in.

Outside of the mariachi, Abby volunteered with Bobcat RISE for one of her Social Work classes. Bobcat RISE is a new educational program at Texas State dedicated to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Abby felt that this volunteer experience matched her interests perfectly.

Abby credits her aunt for helping her find her passion for assisting the special needs population. Abby grew up around her aunt, a special needs individual, and the cause became very dear to her heart.

After she graduates from Texas State, Abby plans to pursue a Master’s degree in social work to counsel and do music therapy. Music therapy is the perfect medley of Abby’s love of mariachi and her desire to help others.

“I thought that it was really cool that I would be able to help people through music,” Abby said.
