Student Spotlight: Kylie Hedge

Kylie Hedge has wanted to be a doctor since middle school. Now as a Bio-Chemistry major with minors in Honors Studies and Biology, Kylie is well on her way to making that dream a reality.

“I get the question a lot ‘‘why did you decide to be a doctor’?” Kylie said. “It’s hard to explain, but I just know that’s what I have to do in life.”

Kylie grew up as an only child in the small town of Mt.Pleasant, Texas, which is about 6-7 hours from San Marcos. Her mom is a mortician and her dad is a rural postman, so Kylie was looking at colleges where she received the most financial aid.

“Texas State is really giving with their money, so it was a lot easier on my parents,” Kylie said.

After getting accepted, Kylie and her parents made the drive to visit Texas State during the February freeze of 2021. While they didn’t get to visit much of campus because of the snow, Kylie now feels at home at Texas State. She’s a Stelos Scholar, a member of Women in Medicine, HOSA, and the Vice President of the Stelos Student Organization.

Other than spending time with friends, Kylie has recently gotten back into reading in her free time. Her favorite recent read is Dance of Thieves (don’t worry she won’t spoil the ending).

“I recently got back into reading,” Kylie said. “It’s something I was into when I was a kid.”

After finishing her undergrad, Kylie plans to go to medical school to continue her plans to be a doctor. Right now, she’s leaning toward anesthesiology but is open to all options.

“I’m very puzzle oriented, and the job description of anesthesiology fits that,” Kylie said.
