Memory Lane : Rocky LaRue's

Hundreds of dollar bills were hung from the ceiling signaling different eras and celebrating friendships, anniversaries, and fun nights out on the square. The owner joked that those dollars would be his retirement fund one day.

You might know it now as Mayloo’s, but ten years ago this building on the square was Rocky LaRue’s, a rowdy college bar frequented by fraternity brothers and Texas State fans.

“It was always fun knowing the bartenders and going to a place where everyone knows your name,” said Nathan McDaniel, TXST alumni.

In the 2010’s, Rocky LaRue’s was the popular place to go after watching the game at Chimmy’s across the street. Students and fans would start their bar crawls at Rocky’s and oftentimes end up there again for a nightcap.

One well-known shot was the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” which was a pungent concoction of bourbons and whiskeys. The more popular choice was the Game Face shot, which was created by placing a shot glass inside a highball glass full of vodka.

“Game Face... a shot you'll never forget,” said Tanner Ross in a review of Rocky’s.

Want to try the Game Face shot? Here’s the recipe courtesy of one of Rocky’s former bartenders.

Game Face Shot:

Sour apple pucker

Watermelon pucker

151 rum

Vodka

Sprite

Cranberry Juice

Redbull

Fill a shot glass with the two puckers. Place the shot inside a highball glass and fill the outside with vodka and sprite to the rim. Top with a splash of cranberry, red bull and a dash of 151 Rum.

Rocky LaRue’s is permanently closed. You can visit the old building where the new bar, Mayloo’s, now resides at 138 N LBJ Dr #5620, San Marcos, TX 78666
