Memory Lane: Grin’s History

On Valentine’s Day in 1975, Grin’s opened with its two new owners Paul W. Sutphen and Jonny Ferrell. As a young man, Paul didn’t have money or a job but he was offered to manage Grin’s and then bought out one of the partners.

Paul started managing Grin’s via trial and error. “At first it was just a matchbox kitchen,” he said.

Three remodels later, Grin’s remains one of San Marcos staple restaurants. Their affordable prices and consistent menu draw college students and alumni who come back year after year. Most of their employees are Texas State students, and Paul says it’s so satisfying to see them graduate.

“It really keeps us young,” Paul said.

In the 1970’s and 80’s, the Texas State cafeterias would close on Sundays. Grin’s was one of the only places open, so they’d pack the restaurant with students eating burgers and drinking their famous sangria wine coolers.

Students are still Grin’s main customers. They’ve formed connections with the music department, and students can rehearse in Grin’s for free. Music has always had a rich history at Grin’s.

In the 1970’s, they had live entertainment from artists such as Robert Watkins and Beacon City Band. The artists would play for 20-30 people in exchange for a free burger and a beer. The restaurant owners say they do what they can to help the community.

“We have a good service for the people of Texas. We feel like we’re part of San Marcos,” said Paul.
