Bobcat Bucket List #95: Kayak to Martindale

The San Marcos River is well known for its wide variety of water activities. While tubing is the main draw, kayaking and canoeing on the San Marcos River is a favorite of many. The spring fed river runs from Aquarena Springs all the way down to the Texas coastline, with Martindale being the next town after San Marcos.

You are more than welcome to bring your own kayak for your day of paddling. Or, if you do not have a kayak, the Texas State Outdoor Center at Sewell Park has many different options to rent. When kayaking on the river, most people find it easiest to drop their boats in at City Park, Plaza Park, Bicentennial Park, or Rio Vista Park.

The San Marcos River is considered a good experience for beginner paddlers, though there are more difficult sections along the way to test your abilities. Be wary of three spots along the route where you may want to pull out and walk your boat due to dangerous water crossings. These three areas are Cape’s Dam, Unnamed Dam, and Martindale Dam.

The 8-10 mile river trip from San Marcos to Martindale typically takes around five hours depending on your route and paddling level. Be sure to pack plenty of water and a few snacks for your adventure.

With crystal clear waters and a wide plant variety to enjoy, plan on a relaxing paddling trip with scenic views. The best time to go is late summer and early fall when the tubing crowds have decreased. Prior to your kayaking trip, be sure to coordinate your ride back from Martindale to San Marcos. The river flows in one direction and will not loop back around.
