Student Profile: Serenity DeLeon

It was love that brought Serenity DeLeon to Texas State. Forget the common trope of following a high school crush to college. For Serenity, it was her parents’ love story that had her excited to enroll.

Serenity’s parents were first generation college students and went to Texas State together. Decades and two kids later, they watched their oldest daughter start her degree in Political Science at Texas State.

“I wanted to follow in their footsteps,” Serenity said.

Serenity would describe herself as an overachiever. Even in high school, she was involved in nine organizations and has done over 1,000 hours of community service. She’s volunteered at the Sequin Chamber of Commerce for three years and the local women’s shelter.

“Its one of my passions and something I grew up doing,” she said. “I’ve taken it opon myself to get very very involved”

Now at Texas State, Serenity is involved in multiple leadership organizations and honors societies including the Stelos Scholars Honors Program. She takes any opportunity she can to further her education and career, which has paid off. She’s been able to meet the former president of Costa Rice, the first Hispanic Congresswoman, and other female leaders in Texas.

“I’m really thankful for everything I learned,” Serenity said.

After finishing her undergraduate degree, Serenity wants to go to grad school and study Public Administration. Eventually, she wants to work in local government and see change actually implemented in her community. Her motto is once you find your passion, don’t let yourself limit that.

“If you’re living the life you want to live, it doesn’t feel overbearing,” she said.
