Student Profile: Jaxson Schoening
In high school, Jaxson Schoening was involved in clubs and leadership positions. He was the only student who was an elected officer for all four years, and he wasn’t going to stop when he went to college. But then the pandemic happened.
Born and raised in San Marcos, Jaxson has always been around Texas State.
“I graduated high school in the pandemic,” Jaxson said. “I didn’t know what I was going to do”
Jaxson decided to enroll in Texas State where he could live at home with his mom, sister, and grandma.
His first semester on campus was lonely. Everything was shut down and virtual, so Jaxson decided to spend that time focusing on his classes. He ended the semester on the Dean’s List and is already on track to graduate early with a degree in Mass Communication. Now, Jaxson is getting involved in leadership positions again.
“The Stelos Scholars summer program was the first thing I got to do as a college student,” Jaxson said. “I’m really grateful because I’ve got to make new friends and start college as a leader.”
The Stelos Scholars Program is a highly competitive scholars’ program for community-minded and intellectually gifted young leaders selected from among the university’s top-level scholarship recipients. In this program, students do a summer intensive, fall course, spring travel, and senior seminar. After going through this program, Jaxson will be set up to be a great leader wherever he works.
In addition to Stelos Scholars, Jaxson is a peer mentor and meets with about 100 students each semester.
“Relationship building is a foundation I want to have in my career,” he said.
Eventually Jaxson wants to plan events for organizations, work in video production, or work in an HR role. In the meantime, Jaxson plans to continue being involved on campus and keeping up his grades until graduation.
