Student Profile: Hannah Carawan

“I am not a pig farmer. The pigs had a great time, but I didn't make any money.” - Willie Nelson

Unlike Willie Nelson, Hannah Carawan was quite the successful pig farmer, and she raised pigs and rabbits for Future Farmer’s of America (FFA). Hannah, her two older siblings, and her pigs grew up in the tiny town of Sinton, Texas with a graduating class of only 143.

After high school, Hannah already knew she wanted to go to Texas State. In fact, that was the only University she applied to.

“What really sold Texas State for me was the Honors College,” she said.

Within the Honors College, Hannah is a part of the first ever Stelos Scholars cohort. The Stelos Scholars Program is a highly competitive scholars’ program for community-minded and intellectually gifted young leaders selected from among the University’s top-level scholarship recipients.

Hannah is a Pre-Med major trying to graduate in 3 years. After she graduates, she wants to take a year to work as an EMT before going back to school.

“I like the challenge that comes with the problem solving aspect of medicine,” Hannah said. “There’s always more to keep learning.”

While graduating with a pre-med degree in 3 years is strenuous, Hannah still finds time to be a Medical Explorer.

This program requires 250 hours of service, and she describes it as similar to Boy Scouts. She has access to medical trainings like HIPPA, First Aid and Emergency Response.

I like spending as much time as i can volunteering

Look for Hannah on the sidelines at Texas State games because she’s one of the medical volunteers tasked with helping injured players!
