Three Activities to Beat the Heat

It’s the hottest summer yet, but that doesn’t mean you need to stay inside all day. Here are our top three activities to do this summer in San Marcos.

BONUS: All of these are on the Bobcat Bucket List!

#1 : Visit Blue Hole Regional Park

A short drive from San Marcos, Blue Hole Regional Park is a spring-fed swimming hole in Wimberley. Cypress trees line the spring making it shaded from the sun and great for photos. Bring your camping chairs and a picnic lunch to make it a day trip.

Before visiting this three-acre park, you’ll need to reserve your spot. Tickets are $12 for adults but only $6 if you live in the 78676 Zip Code. Dogs are allowed on trails only, so if you’re planning on bringing your pup make sure they have plenty of water.

#2: Laugh your Way Through Open-Mic Comedy at Wake the Dead

You may have visited Wake the Dead coffee shop to study, but did you know they have an open-mic comedy night? Performers might not be up to the level of John Mulaney, but they’ll definitely be entertaining.

Open Mic Comedy Nights are every month on a Tuesday at 7pm. Make sure to get there early if you want to sign up and perform. Find their next event on their Facebook Page.

#3: Swim at 5 Mile Dam

5 Mile Dam, also called Johnson & Vetter River Park, is a large swimming, boating and walking area in San Marcos. If you have a large group, this is the ideal place to go. They have picnic tables, plenty of parking, and it’s free to enter.

If it’s a breezy day, walk the easy 2.3 loop trail in the park. Otherwise, bring your tubes, paddleboards and snacks to spend a day swimming in the cool water.

Take note that glass containers and alcohol are not permitted. Park hours are 9am-8pm all summer long.
