Bobcat Bucket List #51: Bring out Your Inner Child at Mermaid Splash

San Marcos’s yearly mermaid festival started as a way to unite this growing town. The town’s history centers around mermaids and their significance with the river. You can learn about mermaid performances at Aquarena Springs here.

According to the Mermaid Society SMTX, the mermaid represents the creative and eco-friendly spirit of San Marcos. The organization supports the community’s youth and river cleanup throughout the year, but it culminates at Mermaid Splash on the square.

Mermaid Splash starts with the Downtown Mermaid Promenade, which is a parade that culminates in a festival at the Hays County Courthouse. There are dozens of vendors selling mermaid-inspired art, live music performances, and plenty of people dressed head-to-toe in mermaid gear.
