Bobcat Bucket List #72: Attend a Common Experience Event

If you are looking to gain knowledge about an unfamiliar topic or are eager to learn more about a topic you are passionate about, consider attending a Common Experiences event. These events are typically free or come at a low cost to students and staff of Texas State University are intended to help foster identity and a sense of belonging.

Each year there is a new theme that the common experiences events follow. For the year 2022-2023, the theme is an academic exploration of systems that impact and shape our lives- for ourselves, for others, and for everything around us.

One of the classes offered through the common experiences events in the past year was Non-Verbal Communication Gestures taught by Dr. Agwuele, a linguist with the department of Anthropology. In this class, students learn how effective non-verbal gestures are to your communication. You can learn what gestures are, how they are used, how they are studied, what role they play in your communication, as well as what their cultural variations and underpinning are.

Other classes offered throughout the 2022-2023 academic year include financial awareness, immigrant rights, common reading book clubs, and even yoga classes.

Check out the yearly schedule for the upcoming academic year and consider attending a common experiences event yourself!
