Mason Hunt Memorial Scholarship

History of the Scholarship

The Mason Hunt Memorial Scholarship is a $5,000 annual award established to honor the memory and legacy of Mason Hunt, a distinguished alumnus of Texas State University.

The scholarship aims to support undergraduate students who exemplify the values and qualities that Mason embodied throughout his life.

Mason Hunt was a remarkable individual who demonstrated exceptional leadership, unwavering faith, and a deep appreciation for the Cowboy Lifestyle. While at Texas State University, he served as President of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and Vice President of the Interfraternity Council. His commitment to service and leadership extended beyond his college years, as he became a successful businessman, an active Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo member, President & Chairman of the Board of the Tejas Vaqueros, and a dedicated rancher. These various aspects of Mason’s life inspired the creation of this scholarship and its focus on leadership, academic excellence, faith, and embodiment of the Cowboy Code of Ethics.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Students must pursue one of the majors offered through the McCoy College of Business or the Department of Agricultural Science at Texas State.

  • Student must be classified as a junior or senior at Texas State.

  • Student must have 54 completed hours if classified as a sophomore.

  • Students in the sophomore, junior, and senior classifications will be enrolled for 12 hours or more at the time of selection. Seniors must have at least one semester remaining until graduation.

  • During selection, the recipient(s) must be in good standing with the University.

  • Students must have an overall Texas State GPA of at least 3.0.

  • Essay: As part of the application process, a personal essay is required.
    • Prompt: Address the following topics in your essay that relate to you
      • Leadership and Community Involvement: Describe your leadership roles and involvement in campus or community initiatives. How have you demonstrated a commitment to positively impacting TXST and/or the community? How do you plan to do so after college?
      • Academic Excellence: Discuss your academic achievements and the pursuit of excellence in your studies. With a focus on your field of interest, whether business, agriculture or a related area, explain how you have exhibited intellectual curiosity and a strong work ethic.

      • Faith and Values: Reflect on how your faith and values shape your life and actions. Provide examples of your involvement in faith-based organizations or activities. What roles do faith and values play in your vision for your future?

      • Code of the West Ethos: Describe how the core values of hard work, self-reliance, honesty, integrity, courage, community, and loyalty manifest in your life.

      • Goals: What do you plan to do after college?

      • Additional Considerations: Please note any personal or financial challenges you have faced, as the selection committee may consider them. This scholarship aims to recognize merit and offer support where it can be most impactful.

      • Must be double-spaced
      • Typed in a 12-point font
      • Maximum of 750 words
Application Process

The Scholarship shall be presented annually at the Stelos Alliance Scholarship Awards Banquet. The time and place are to be determined by Stelos Alliance but will be in San Marcos, TX.
