Student Spotlight: Gabriel Castillo

Like many first-born children, Gabriel was one of those high schoolers that did a bit of everything. He was a part of the National Honors Society, ran cross country, and played in the marching band.

“It was certainly fun, but I feel like I overworked myself,” Gabriel said.

One of the most important lessons Gabriel learned was not to overcommit. With all of his extracurriculars, he didn’t have a great sleep schedule and eventually got exhausted. When he decided to go to Texas State, he made sure he had balance in his life.

“I had a lot of friends that, funny enough, followed me to Texas State,” Gabriel said. “But that’s not why I chose it.”

Gabriel chose Texas State because of the exciting environment, beautiful campus and proximity to home. He grew up in Austin, which for him is the perfect distance to become independent while still being close to his younger siblings.

Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Gabriel is a Business Finance major. His grandfather owned an accounting firm and was the treasurer for the GI forum, a Hispanic civil rights organization.

“He did a lot and helped a lot of people,” Gabriel said.

Gabriel’s family cares deeply about education and has always encouraged him to work hard and get his degree. Outside of classes, Gabriel is the Treasurer for the Stelos student organization and a member of Stelos Scholars. After graduating, he hopes to get his masters in accounting and join a firm.
