Bobcat Bucket List #92: Learn About Local Haunts
It’s time to learn about local legends and haunted spots around San Marcos. We recommend going in the evening around Halloween if you like being scared!
Thompson Island Bridge
The most famous Texas State ghost story is about a soldier who had a promise to keep. Legend has it that there’s a Confederate soldier that patrols the Thompson Island Bridge, but he only appears when the USA is at war. This soldier is said to patrol to fulfill the promise he made to his brother that he’d return home from the war.
Sterry Hall
Sterry Hall is a co-ed dorm on campus that’s been considered haunted for years. Opened in the 1960’s, residents have seen various ghosts throughout the years. Students and alumni fondly call it “Scary Sterry.”
The Tree of Life
A huge tree in the middle of campus near the LBJ Student Center is said to be haunted. There’s a ghost story about how someone was hanged on the tree. If you visit at night, you can hear the sounds of a person crying.
Old Main
It’s been said that a student fell or was pushed out of the third story window at Old Main. Ever since she died, professors and students have seen her walking through the third floor halls still carrying her textbooks.
The PIKE House
This one’s on an infamous fraternity activity: hazing. Apparently, a PIKE pledge died from hazing and the rest of the pledges were told to write the events in a book. The book was burned and nailed to the wall of the room where the pledge died. Afterwards, people reported all kinds of paranormal activity in the house until it burned down in 2007.
