Bobcat Bucket List #89: Drink at the Bars on the Square

There are so many options to have a drink in San Marcos, so we made a list of our favorites. Between historic favorites and new bars, there are plenty of places to check off your list.

AXIS - New

AXIS is a premier underground bar that promotes live entertainment and food and drinks late into the night. AXIS was featured on the reality tv show, Bar Rescue, and has since drawn a large crowd of students.

AXIS is popular for its karaoke bar and support of the local community. Founded in 2018, AXIS was opened just 2 days before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Jovan Marin and his friends Henry Hogensen and Miles Altgelt founded Axis bar together after seeing the need for a bar where women felt safe. Now, the bar is nominated San Marcos’ Best Bar by Barstool.

“Our bar is a college bar,” Henry Hogensen said. “We want to give back to the community that’s been so good to us.”

Axis Bar was able to reopen months later and quickly grow. Not only are they committed to be a safe space for women to drink, but they also give back to the San Marcos community. They recently sponsored a Stelos Leaders Scholarship for Nisha McDonald, find her story here.

“Anyone can sell a Bud Light,” Jovan said. “It takes a culture to involve the community.”

Mayloo’s - Historic

Mayloo’s has been a Bobcat favorite for decades, but it’s far from a dive bar. They have a sporty atmosphere and a variety of games, like darts and foosball, to play while watching live games on tv.

Mayloo’s has daily drink specials and bar food all night long. They recommend coming early on busy nights if you want to grab one of their famous back porch swings.

Harper’s, Snappaheads, and Rooftop at Veranda - All Around Fun

All located in the same three-story building, it’s easy to visit Harper’s, Snappaheads, and Rooftop at Veranda in one night.

The bottom floor is home to Harper’s Pub. This traditional pub serves pizza and wings. The middle floor houses Snappaheads, which is a shot bar. The top floor is the most popular and is home to Rooftop at Veranda. All three bars have dance floors and drink specials to keep you entertained all night long.
