Alumni Profile: Emily Cruz Robbins
Emily Cruz Robbins was one of those classic beautiful, popular girls you thought only existed in movies. She was a Texas State cheerleader, in the Chi-Omega sorority, and now works for the Dallas Cowboys. She graduated Texas State in 1988 with a journalism degree and was recruited through the NFL’s newly created minority program in New York.
“I came on campus not knowing anyone,” Emily said. “I thought it was best to get involved.”
Emily didn’t know what she wanted to major in when she enrolled in Texas State, but by her junior year she realized she loved journalism. She was planning on moving to Austin after she graduated to work for a PR firm, but instead she took the NFL job in New York City. After a couple years, she moved back to Dallas and eventually started working for the Dallas Cowboys.
“NYC was a bit of a lonely place,” Emily said. “I started to long for home.”
It started with coordinating players to volunteer with hospital visits and community events. Over time, she began to oversee the community outreach work with former players to get them involved too.
“I am grateful to be part of the fun and happy stuff,” Emily said.
If you’re from the Dallas area, you might recognize events such as the Salvation Army Red Kettle Kickoff, NFL Play 60, Hispanic Heritage Month and Make A Wish. Emily is instrumental in organizing these charity events with the Cowboys and the Dallas community.
Thirty years later, Emily still keeps in touch with her sorority sisters and friends from Texas State.
“It’s more than just Christmas cards,” Emily said. “I connect a lot with my sorority sisters and the squad I cheered with. We get to watch our kids grow up on Facebook.”
